added: 2009-05-09

More and more consumers want to make a difference when it comes to caring for our planet. According to a new online poll for SC Johnson, nearly three out of four American women cited the use of cleaner energy sources, biodegradable products and recycling as their top environmental concerns.

The Omnibus survey findings revealed that 74 percent of women surveyed ranked the use of cleaner energy sources as important. This was followed closely by biodegradable/earth-friendly products and recycling, each garnering 72 percent. Respondents were asked to rate a host of issues that included among others, protecting endangered species, slowing climate change and supporting college scholarships. Six out 10 women felt it's time to promote a greener economy, while 57 percent are behind promoting green and sustainable development.

"Consumers are more and more interested in taking actions that make a difference for the environment," said Kelly Semrau, SC Johnson Vice President of Global Public Affairs and Communication. "As a mom, I am always looking to live in a way that preserves the earth. As a family company, SC Johnson has a long-standing commitment to the environment by helping consumers make wise choices that are better for the planet."

Doing your part

Semrau offered these simple tips to help consumers shop smartly, recycle, and conserve energy and natural resources to make a difference every day.

1. Shop wisely - buy items in bulk when you can to eliminate excess packaging, and repackage them into smaller reusable containers like Ziploc(R) brand containers.

2. Start recycling - set up a designated place in your home or garage for recycling - you will be more likely to recycle when a container is handy and serves as a reminder. Rinse cans and bottles before recycling. It makes them easier to process, which keeps costs lower.

3. Manage your power use - turn off your computer and monitor when not in use - even on standby mode they still draw power. Also, look for appliances not currently in use and unplug them - even when not on, they may be drawing energy. One way SC Johnson is doing what's right for the environment is by reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, SC Johnson sources 38 percent of its global electricity from clean renewable solutions like wind energy and a co-generation turbine.

4. Don't waste a drop - turn off the water while you brush your teeth to save up to four gallons a minute and turn it off while you shampoo or condition your hair to save up to 50 gallons a week!

5. Go natural - use products that are made with natural ingredients. Nature's Source(TM) products, is a new line of all-natural and biodegradable cleaners. Designed for glass and surface, bathroom, toilet and others surfaces and areas in the home, they tackle tough cleaning jobs with the power of the Windex(R) and Scrubbing Bubbles(R) trusted brand names, meeting parents' needs for products that clean naturally, effectively and affordability, leaving nothing behind but a fresh scent.
