"As more mobile commerce services become available and consumers develop a greater trust for phone-based transactions, we expect commerce to be an increasingly important part of the mobile experience next year and beyond," said Nic Covey, director of insights at Nielsen Mobile, in a statement.
Nielsen also reported that 6.5 million US mobile consumers had used text messaging to make a purchase.
The study found that security is the number one concern among those mobile data users not yet participating in m-commerce, with 41% of data users who do not participate saying that is their biggest concern. In addition, 23% say they worry about being charged for the airtime and 21% say they do not trust that the transaction will be completed.
Those reservations were also found by a December 2007 study by Harris Interactive. Six out of 10 US mobile device users surveyed expressed security or privacy concerns about mobile commerce.
