New York: Employee Confidence Dips as Concern About Job Availability and Employer's Future Grow
added: 2008-10-17

The New York Employee Confidence Index decreased 2.4 points to 47.7 in September, according to the latest Spherion(R) Employment Report. The monthly survey of New York workers, conducted by Harris Interactive(R) on behalf of Spherion Corporation, found that, contrary to August's report, more workers are concerned about job availability, and the future of their current employer.

Results from the New York Employment Report

- Only seven percent of workers believe that there are more jobs available, a decrease of 10 percentage points from August.

- Seventy-eight percent of workers say they are unlikely to lose their jobs, an increase of six percentage points from the previous month.

- Fewer workers (61 percent) are confident in the future of their current employer, a seven-percentage-point decrease from August.

"Clearly there is economic uncertainty across the country, and some of that concern is trickling down to the state, which explains why we are seeing a fluctuation in overall confidence," said Linda Perneau, vice president of Spherion Staffing Services. "For the most part, New Yorkers are still feeling that their jobs are safe, which is good news. We also continue to see slight job gains in areas that have remained strong throughout this year, such as healthcare, hospitality and education."
