Recycled Handsets Worth $3B by 2012

Does your handset look familiar? It's possible you’ve seen it before.

According to the "Handset Recycling and Refurbishment" report from ABI Research, shipments of recycled handsets will exceed 100 million units in 2012.

In that year alone, ABI projects that the recycled handset market will generate more than $3 billion in revenue.

“Mobile phone recycling companies are witnessing good market growth,” said Shailendra Pandey, ABI analyst. “But increasing consumer awareness and retrieving used handsets at affordable prices are still key challenges.”

The industry is taking steps to support the trend, however.

Major handset vendors—including Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Samsung and LG—are designing and manufacturing mobile phones that are more easily recyclable and contain a minimum of hazardous elements.

Their efforts are being complemented by mobile operators, retailers, recycling companies and even charities that are offering consumers various take-back incentives for “old” handsets.
