Tea Party Wants Government Job Creation: Bloomberg National Poll
added: 2010-03-29

"Tea Party" advocates, who are becoming a force in U.S. politics, want the federal government out of their lives, except when it comes to creating jobs, according to the Bloomberg National Poll, a quarterly survey of Americans.

More than 90 percent of Tea Party supporters say that the U.S. is verging more toward socialism than capitalism, the federal government is trying to control too many aspects of private life and more decisions should be made at the state level. Ninety percent of Tea Party supporters believe that the country is on the wrong track and almost the same number doubt Washington can find solutions. Almost 80 percent say expansion of the government’s role in the economy is a high threat and majorities of both Democrats and Republicans Tea Party supporters agree that government spending is out of control, according to the Bloomberg National Poll, which interviewed a random sample of 1,002 U.S. adults ages 18 or older.

While critical of the federal government, 70 percent of those who sympathize with the Tea Party want a federal government that fosters job-creation. Tea Party supporters also look to the government to rein in Wall Street, with almost half saying the government should do something about executive bonuses.

Overall, 26 percent of those polled identified themselves as Tea Party backers while 53 said they weren’t and 21 percent were unsure. Many are withholding judgment, with 35 percent saying they have neither a favorable nor unfavorable opinion of the group. Still, majorities of both Democrats and Republicans agree that government spending is out of control and 92 percent of Republicans and 71 percent of independents say the government tries to control too many aspects of private life.
