U.S. Real Earnings in February 2011

Real average hourly earnings for all employees fell 0.5 percent from January to February, seasonally adjusted, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. This decrease stemmed from a 0.5 percent increase in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), while average hourly earnings remained unchanged.

Real average weekly earnings fell 0.5 percent over the month, as a result of the average workweek remaining unchanged combined with the decline in real average hourly earnings.

Real average hourly earnings fell by 0.4 percent, seasonally adjusted, from February 2010 to February 2011. A 0.6 percent increase in average weekly hours combined with the decrease in real average hourly earnings resulted in a 0.2 percent increase in real average weekly earnings during this period.

Production and nonsupervisory employees

Real average hourly earnings for production and nonsupervisory employees fell by 0.6 percent from January to February, seasonally adjusted. This decrease stemmed from a 0.6 percent increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), while average hourly earnings remained unchanged.

Real average weekly earnings fell 0.3 percent over the month, as a 0.3 percent increase in the average workweek combined with the decrease in real average hourly earnings.

Real average hourly earnings fell 0.2 percent, seasonally adjusted, from February 2010 to February 2011. A 0.9 percent increase in the average workweek combined with the decrease in real average hourly earnings resulted in a 0.6 percent increase in real average weekly earnings during this period.
