"If carriers can hold onto their position in the revenue chain, data is poised to give them a second growth spurt," said Sharon Armbrust, a senior analyst at SNL Kagan, in a statement.
"While subscriber units and voice revenue will inch along, we expect data revenue to grow at a compound annual 14% rate over the next 10 years, rising to at least 22% of service revenue, compared to under 10% today," she said.
SNL Kagan estimates total mobile industry average revenue per user to grow at an inflation-paced compound annual growth rate of 1.5% over the next 10 years, to $61.09 in 2017 from $52.38 in August 2007.
Average revenue per user to date was up 45% to $8.58 in the first quarter of 2007 versus $5.92 in the year-ago period.
