New data from Dow Jones VentureSource shows that the U.S. venture capital industry continued to contract in the first quarter of the year. Venture capitalists invested just $3.90 billion in U.S. companies in the quarter, a 50% decline from the nearly $7.78 billion invested over the same period in 2008 and the lowest quarterly investment total since 1998. Only 477 venture deals were completed in the quarter, well below the 706 deals done in the first quarter last year and the industry's lowest quarterly deal total since 1996.

Regional and state unemployment rates were nearly all higher in March. Forty-six states recorded over-the-month unemployment rate increases, North Dakota and the District of Columbia registered rate decreases, and 3 states had no change in their rate, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Over the year, jobless rates were up in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The national unemployment rate rose from 8.1 percent in February to 8.5 percent in March, which was 3.4 percent-age points higher than in March 2008.

The economy has not dampened the green commitments of most U.S. consumers, according to a recent national poll in which more than two thirds of those who purchase "green" products or services said their "green" buying habits are unchanged and one quarter said they've actually increased their purchase of "green" goods or services. Only 8 percent of "green" purchasers said the economy has reduced their buying of "green" products and services.

Renters are doing their part to save the environment. During a national survey, more than 65 percent of renters told Apartments.com that practicing an environmentally-friendly lifestyle is a high priority. To conserve energy, 52 percent of renters are turning off lights and computers when not in use, setting air conditioners and heaters on timers and using energy-efficient light bulbs. Twenty-two percent are recycling paper, plastics and electronics.
