According to a new report issued by the Geothermal Energy Association (GEA), changes made in 2005 to federal geothermal leasing laws are bringing in millions of new and additional dollars to federal, state, and county government coffers. In just two years, FY 2007 and FY 2008, $82 million in new revenues were generated by geothermal activities, according to GEA.

Mortgage rates fell for the third week in a row, tying a record low last seen in 2003. According to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate dropped to 5.28 percent with an average of 0.42 discount and origination points.

The U.S. Import Price Index declined 4.2 percent in December, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported, following decreases in each of the previous four months. Export prices also fell for the fifth consecutive month, declining 2.3 percent in December after a 3.4 percent drop the previous month.

Retail sales have been dismal, but the real damage to profitability and viability was unprecedented deep discounting, according to Grant Thornton Corporate Advisory and Restructuring Services. U.S. employers will be required to contribute more than $108 billion into their defined benefit plans this year, according to an analysis by Watson Wyatt. Although that's roughly $16 billion less than employers would have had to contribute without the passage of a new pension funding relief law late last year, Watson Wyatt pension experts say employers will still need additional relief.
