Mortgage rates moved lower this week, with the average conforming 30-year fixed mortgage rate now 6.29 percent. According to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey of large lenders, the average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.38 discount and origination points.

In October there were 4,161,700 online advertised vacancies, a decrease of 108,300 or -2.5% percent from the September level, according to The Conference Board Help-Wanted OnLine Data Series™. Nationally online advertised vacancies were up (8.6%) over the year (October'06 - October'07). There were 2.71 advertised vacancies online for every 100 persons in the labor force in October.

Starting November 1, consumers in all 50 states will be able to freeze access to their credit files at all three major credit bureaus to prevent identity thieves from opening fraudulent accounts in their names. By that date, all three major credit bureaus will offer "security freeze" protection to all consumers living in the eleven states that have not passed laws requiring it and the five states that currently limit this protection to identity theft victims.

Unemployment rates were higher in September than a year earlier in 184 of the 369 metropolitan areas, lower in 154 areas, and unchanged in 31 areas, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Thirty-four metropolitan areas registered jobless rates below 3.0 percent, while two areas recorded rates higher than 10.0 percent. The national unemployment rate in September was 4.5 percent, not seasonally adjusted.
