Plug-in electric vehicles, including plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles, have the potential to make up 9% of auto sales in 2020 and 22% in 2030 (1.6 million and 4 million vehicle sales respectively), according to research company Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Overall, the October issue of the Office Depot Small Business Index reveals that attitudes toward the economy have improved over the past month among both small- and medium-sized businesses.

Compensation costs for civilian workers increased 0.4 percent, seasonally adjusted, for the 3-month period ending September 2010, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Wages and salaries (which make up about 70 percent of compensation costs) increased 0.3 percent while benefits (which make up the remaining 30 percent of compensation) increased 0.6 percent.

Traditional media is in trouble. Newspapers are struggling with circulation and magazines like Newsweek are being sold for $1. And, while two-thirds of Americans (67%) still agree that they prefer to get their news in more traditional ways such as network television and/or reading newspapers or magazines in print, over half of Americans (55%) say traditional media as we currently know it will no longer exist in ten years. Additionally, half of U.S. adults (50%) say they tend to get almost all their news online.

Some shoppers may be loosening their financial belts a bit this holiday season, but ongoing economic turbulence continues to motivate many to insist on getting a bigger bang for their buck. According to a new Consumer Reports Holiday Shopping Poll, about one in three Americans plan to spend less this holiday season, down from 42 percent in 2008.

Mortgage rates increased this week, with the average rate on the benchmark conforming 30-year fixed mortgage rate moving to 4.51 percent, according to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey. The average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.33 discount and origination points.

With all the financial reports released each month, one thing that seems to garner the attention of even people who may not usually be aware of economic news is the unemployment report. Talk of a jobless recovery dominates the airwaves and Americans definitely do not see any good news about jobs. Just over one in ten U.S. adults (13%) say the job market in their area of the country is good and two-thirds (66%) say it is bad.

New light vehicle sales (including fleet) in the U.S. for October 2010 is expected to be 927,676 units, up nearly 11 percent from October 2009 and a decrease of 3 percent from September 2010 (on an unadjusted basis).
