The weekly average rate borrowers were quoted on Zillow Mortgage Marketplace for 30-year fixed mortgages decreased last week to 4.95 percent, down from 4.96 percent the week prior, according to the Zillow Mortgage Rate Monitor, compiled by leading real estate Web site Zillow.com®. Rates for 15-year fixed mortgages fell to 4.37 percent from 4.39 percent, and 5-1 adjustable rate mortgages fell to 3.83 percent, down from 3.85 the week prior.

On the last business day of August, the number of job openings in the U.S. was little changed at a series low level of 2.4 million, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. The hires rate was little changed and remained low at 3.1 percent in August. The total separations rate was little changed and remained low at 3.3 percent.

The Conference Board Measure of CEO Confidence, which had increased in the second quarter of 2009, increased further in the third quarter. The Measure now stands at 63, up from 55 in the previous quarter (a reading of more than 50 points reflects more positive than negative responses). This is the third consecutive increase. The survey includes about 100 business leaders in a wide range of industries.

Against a backdrop of prolonged recession, U.S. employers will see an increase in their medical benefit expenditures of 7% in 2010. The cumulative effect of ongoing cost increases combined with the current economic climate are creating significant affordability challenges for both employers and employees, according to new data from Towers Perrin. The study findings also show that many employers are preparing to take action by embracing new approaches to benefit management that have the potential to fundamentally transform the current model of health care delivery.

Nearly two in five employed U.S. online adults work from home at least one day a month, according to new research from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) ®. The Telework and the Technologies Enabling Work Outside Corporate Walls study also shows that most teleworkers plan to spend at least $925 over the next year on technology products to help them work from home.

Propelled by diminishing concerns about current personal finances and job security, U.S. consumer sentiment reached a twelve-month high in October, according to the most recent results of the RBC CASH (Consumer Attitudes and Spending by Household) Index. Gains were made in every facet of consumer sentiment, with overall consumer confidence climbing 11.8 points. As a result, the RBC Index stands at 51.8 this month, compared to 40.0 in September. This marks a 50-point improvement over the all-time low of 1.6 observed in February 2009.
