Regional and state unemployment rates were nearly all higher in January. Forty-nine states and the District of Columbia recorded over- the-month unemployment rate increases, while all states and the District of Columbia had higher rates than a year earlier, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. The national unemployment rate rose from 7.2 percent in December to 7.6 percent in January and was 2.7 percentage points higher than a year earlier.

MerchantCircle released survey results compiled from 378 local business owners throughout New York. More than 75% of business owners say they have seen a "moderate" to "severe" decline in sales and revenue from the same point last year. Only 4% of business owners believe the stimulus bill proposed by the Obama administration does enough for small business owners, while 59% say the plan does not. 37% say they "don't know enough about [the plan]" to have an opinion.

The weekly average rate borrowers were quoted on Zillow Mortgage Marketplace for thirty-year mortgages remained relatively steady for the third consecutive week at 5.28 percent, down slightly from 5.29 percent the week prior, according to the Zillow Mortgage Rate Monitor, compiled by leading real estate Web site Zillow.com®.
