In June, employers took 1,643 mass layoff actions, seasonally adjusted, as measured by new filings for unemployment insurance benefits during the month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Each action involved at least 50 persons from a single employer; the number of workers involved totaled 165,697, on a seasonally adjusted basis.

The new numbers on the CPI and PPI clearly reinforced the Federal Reserve Chairman's remarks about heightened inflation concerns. Industrial production unexpectedly rose, surely a one-month reprieve in what has been a more than year-long slump. Home building, however, appears to have stabilized at an annual rate of close to one million units.

This was 4.2 percent higher than a year earlier, compared with a gain of 4.4 percent in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) over the same period.
