Employer costs for employee compensation averaged $28.46 per hour worked in March 2008, the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Wages and salaries, which averaged $19.83, accounted for 69.7 percent of these costs, while benefits, which averaged $8.63, accounted for the remaining 30.3 percent.

The Deloitte Research Leading Index of Consumer Spending increased in June putting a break on the free fall the Index has experienced since October 2007. The Index attempts to track consumer cash flow as an indicator of future consumer spending.

On the last business day of April, there were 3.7 million job openings in the United States, and the job openings rate was 2.6 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. The job openings, hires, and total separations rates were essentially unchanged in April. This release includes estimates of the number and rate of job openings, hires, and separations for the total nonfarm sector by industry and geographic region.

The housing downturn continues to have 'legs', and most of the statistical data reported so far in 2008 are discouraging, according to Fitch Ratings. The spring selling season was a 'bust'. Although it does not appear likely that the year-over-year declines in major metrics such as starts, new home sales, and existing home sales will continue at the current pronounced pace throughout this year, the decreases are likely to be greater than Fitch's prior projections.

The cost of summer driving, with oil prices nearing $140 a barrel, has become an increasing financial burden for many American consumers.

The Conference Board's new Employment Trends Index (ETI)™ fell in May, continuing a decline that began in July 2007 and suggesting more softening to come in the labor market. The index (1996=100), fell in May by 0.5 percent to 113.7 from 114.3 in April and is down 6 percent since July 2007.

As mid-year approaches, it appears that the labor market, housing market, and the economy in general are weak but not getting weaker. The big problem going forward is the lack of any signs that conditions may start to improve any time soon. The forward indicators of the economy suggest no quick turnaround. The forward indicators of labor market activity suggest the economy has to pick up before the job market will.
