Earlier this year, Americans seemed to see some green shoots and there was a little economic optimism forming. At the moment, this optimism seems to have slowed down slightly. Looking ahead to the coming year, just three in ten U.S. adults (30%) say they expect the economy to improve while two in five (42%) say it will stay the same; 28% believe it will get worse. Last month, almost two in five Americans (38%) said they thought the economy would improve in the coming year while 34% said it would stay the same and 28% believed it would get worse.

A majority of large employers now automatically enroll workers into their 401(k) plans, the nation's predominant vehicle for employees to save for retirement, according to a new survey by Towers Watson, a global professional services company. The survey also found that target-date funds are the most prevalent default investment option used for 401(k) plans.

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index® which had been on the rise for three consecutive months, declined sharply in June. The Index now stands at 52.9 (1985=100), down from 62.7 in May. The Present Situation Index decreased to 25.5 from 29.8. The Expectations Index declined to 71.2 from 84.6 last month.

A new survey shows three-out-of-four (77 percent) U.S. adults support the concept of modifying the 401k retirement plan system to specify that employer contributions be used to provide a guaranteed stream of income. That change is part of a new public policy proposal made by Nationwide Financial Services, Inc. to government officials and members of Congress. The telephone survey was commissioned by Nationwide Financial and conducted by Harris Interactive in April.

New Hay Group research shows that planned salary increases for 2011 are at 3.0% and reflect a sustained uptick relative to the low point in March 2009, when salary increases were at a low point of 2.0% for most employee groups and 0% for executives. After factoring in annualized consumer price index growth for 2010 at 2.0%, the result is a ‘real’ gain of 1.0%.

While PC prices continued to erode in 2009, the PC accessories market remained vibrant and expanding. The fourth annual International Data Corporation (IDC) Beyond-the-Box survey shows that U.S. consumers spent at least $1.05 on PC accessories and peripherals for every $1 spent on a PC in 2009, compared to $0.87 per dollar the previous year. In 2010, IDC expects U.S. consumers to spend at least $28.6 billion on acquiring a variety of products and services to enhance their PC performance and their own personal user experience.

Small business owners’ economic confidence leveled off in June, halting a two-month rise, according to the Discover® Small Business WatchSM. The index dipped to 86.1 this month from 87.4 in May as rising concerns over temporary cash flow issues offset some improvement in the way small business owners see the climate for their own operations.
