The U.S. Import Price Index increased 2.8 percent in March, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported, as higher prices for both petroleum and nonpetroleum imports contributed to the advance. The rise followed 0.2 percent and 1.5 percent increases in February and January. Export prices rose 1.5 percent in March, after advancing 1.1 percent and 1.2 percent for the prior two months.

Pessimism among U. S. consumers continues to spread as Americans' sentiments concerning the future turn particularly gloomy, according to the most recent results of the RBC CASH (Consumer Attitudes and Spending by Household) Index. The survey found that while consumer attitudes regarding current conditions and investments show signs of stabilizing, Americans' confidence in future personal financial conditions continue to weaken. As a result, the overall RBC CASH Index dropped to an all-time low this month since its inception in 2002 to 29.5, compared to 33.1 in March.

Gallup's measure of Americans'positive economic mood stands at a gloomy 29.2 in Gallup Poll Daily tracking interviewing from April 1-8, 2008, similar to the 29.0 reading for all of March. The measure - reflecting Americans' positive perceptions of the U.S. economy - was 37.1 in February and 43.2 in January.

Today, 34 percent of American adults fit the definition of "obese." Obese employees cost U.S. private employers an estimated $45 billion annually in medical expenditures and work loss.
