Regional and state unemployment rates were little changed in August. Twenty-seven states recorded unemployment rate increases, 13 states registered rate decreases, and 10 states and the District of Columbia had no rate change, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Twenty-six states and the District of Columbia posted unemployment rate decreases from a year earlier, 21 states reported increases, and 3 states had no change. The national jobless rate was about unchanged in August at 9.6 percent and also little different from a year earlier (9.7 percent).

Data through August 2010, released today by Standard & Poor's and Experian for the S&P/Experian Consumer Credit Default Indices, a comprehensive measure of changes in consumer credit defaults, show the monthly default rates declined for second mortgages to 2.4% after last months rise to 2.8%. First mortgage and bank card loans declined from July to 3.2% and 7.9% respectively. Auto loans increased for the second month in a row from 1.96% in July to 2.05% in August.

The 2008-2009 recession led to smaller cost increases at many long-term care facilities and forced some to close altogether, according to a study released by Prudential Financial Inc. The bi-annual report, 2010 Long-Term Care Cost Study, measures trends in costs associated with the major forms of long-term care services. And, for the first time, the research includes consumer views that measure sentiment around the cost of services and levels of awareness and concern about the future need for long-term care and how to fund it.
