Economic confidence among small business owners rose for the second consecutive month, although concerns about being able to pay their bills jumped significantly in July as measured by the latest Discover® Small Business WatchSM. The index rose to 82.1, up from 80.9 in June.

A new Deloitte survey of more than 220 private company financial professionals indicates support for having separate accounting standards for private and public companies. And, with the International Accounting Standards Board's (IASB) just-released International Financial Reporting Standards for Small and Medium-Sized Entities (IFRS for SMEs), Deloitte expects more private companies to support separate accounting standards.

Although new-vehicle retail sales in July are projected to decrease 19 percent from July 2008, this marks an improvement in year-over-year declines observed for the first half of 2009, according to J.D. Power and Associates, which gathers real-time transaction data from more than 10,000 dealerships across the United States. Sales for the first half of 2009 are down 32 percent from the same period in 2008.

Average pay for civilian workers in the San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland, CA metropolitan area was 19 percent above the national average in 2008, one of 77 metropolitan areas studied by the National Compensation Survey (NCS), the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported.

Nearly half of American adults feel the economy has farther to fall, according to a recent survey conducted by StrategyOne. The study reveals a general trend toward pessimism, with a corresponding drop in the percentage of Americans who feel the economy "has already bottomed out and is getting better" from June (34%) to July (28%).

The use of derivatives among U.S. companies is widespread, although an overwhelming majority of the exposure is concentrated among financial institutions, according to a Fitch Ratings review of first-quarter financial statements. The first-quarter 2009 (1Q'09) financial reports marked the first time that comprehensive derivatives disclosure was mandated for all U.S. companies.

How is the economic downturn affecting the American workplace? A new study released by the Families and Work Institute (FWI) finds that in the face of recession, and at a time of cost cutting, the overwhelming majority of employers (94%) are maintaining or increasing their workplace flexibility programs. In fact a quarter of the employers (26%) specifically used flexible workplace options - from reduced work weeks to telecommuting - to minimize the need for layoffs.
