The number of Fortune 1000 firms that have a frozen pension plan increased again this year as companies continue to look for ways to control their retirement benefit expenses, according to an annual analysis by Watson Wyatt, a leading global consulting firm. Meanwhile, a separate study by Watson Wyatt found that freezing a pension plan does not lead to a boost in a company's stock price.

Employers took 2,763 mass layoff actions in June that resulted in the separation of 279,231 workers, seasonally adjusted, as measured bynew filings for unemployment insurance benefits during the month, theBureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Each action involved at least 50 persons from a single employer. The number of mass layoff events decreased by 170 and associated initial claims decreased by 33,649.

U.S. employees can expect pay increases of 3.0% in 2010, according to a new Hay Group study. Planned increases at 3.0% are consistent for executives, middle management, supervisory and clerical positions. After factoring in the consumer price index growth forecast for 2010 at 1.3%, the result is a ‘real’ gain of 1.7%.

comScore, Inc. released its monthly analysis of U.S. Web activity at the top online properties for June 2009 based on data from the comScore Media Metrix service. Online visitation to travel sites gained as Americans began planning and preparing for their summer vacations. The end of another school year resulted in an increase of interest at gaming sites. Career services and development sites saw strong growth due to the influx of recent college graduates entering the job market, in addition to a rising unemployment rate.

An analysis of vehicle sales and gas prices by Experian Automotive has found that while higher gas prices may create an immediate demand for small cars, this demand is not sustained, as many might think. Measuring vehicle sales against the erratic fluctuations in gas prices in 2008 and early 2009, Experian Automotive's research showed that as fast as market share for vehicles in the Small Car - Economy class escalated, it normalized just as quickly - even as gas prices remained 25 percent higher than at the beginning of the year.

In a market shaped by mass job loss, mature workers are a critical workforce segment that has been hit particularly hard. Twenty-eight percent of workers age 55 and older who were laid off in the last 12 months found new jobs, the lowest of all age groups. This compares to 71 percent of those ages 25 to 34. A new study from CareerBuilder shows mature workers are expanding their job search to include entry-level positions, internships, relocation and other options to secure gainful employment - and employers are open to it.
