For the first time since 1980 the U.S. rate of inflation is higher than the average total salary budget increase. During the 12-month period ending April 2011 inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, was 3.2 percent. That compared to a total salary budget increase of 2.8 percent for the same period. Compensation costs for civilian workers increased 0.7 percent, seasonally adjusted, for the 3-month period ending June 2011, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Wages and salaries (which make up about 70 percent of compensation costs) increased 0.4 percent, and benefits (which make up the remaining 30 percent of compensation) increased 1.3 percent.

With more than 42 million Americans participating in corporate pensions today, a Fidelity Investments® survey of corporate pension plan participants has found a widespread lack of awareness about how those plans work. Seventy one percent of those surveyed do not have detailed knowledge of how their pension plans operate, yet more than half said they are counting on those pensions to help pay for living expenses in retirement.

Mortgage rates turned course this week with the benchmark conforming 30-year fixed mortgage rate rising to 4.74 percent, according to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey. The average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.35 discount and origination points.

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index®, which had declined in June, improved slightly in July. The Index now stands at 59.5 (1985=100), up from 57.6 in June. The Present Situation Index decreased to 35.7 from 36.6. The Expectations Index rose to 75.4 from 71.6 last month.
