In July, the teen labor market participation rate - which measures the number of teens with a job or actively looking for a job - fell to 41.2%, according to the Labor Department's July jobs report. This decline indicates that many teens are leaving the job market during the height of the summer job season. The likely causes are state and federal minimum wage hikes, which destroy entry-level job opportunities.

As gas prices begin to fall, so does consumer interest in fuel-efficient vehicles, according the latest Cars.com Consumer Search Index. Cars.com is reporting a decline in searches for hybrids and other fuel-efficient cars, all of which saw dramatic increases over the last several months when gas prices were at all-time highs.

Nonfarm payroll employment continued to trend up (+92,000) in July, and the unemployment rate (4.6 percent) was essentially unchanged, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Employment grew in several service-providing industries. Average hourly earnings rose by 6 cents, or 0.3 percent.

Hybrid vehicles are on course to achieve record sales in 2007, increasing by 35 percent compared with 2006. According to the report, an estimated 187,000 hybrid vehicles were sold in the U.S. market through the first half of 2007, accounting for 2.3 percent of the total U.S. new light-vehicle market through June.
