Regional and state unemployment rates were generally little changed in June. Overall, 19 states registered over-the-month unemployment rate increases, 17 states recorded decreases, and 14 states and the District of Columbia had no changes, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Over the year, jobless rates declined in 27 states and the District of Columbia, rose in 18 states, and were unchanged in 5 states. The national unemployment rate was unchanged in June at 4.5 percent.

Additionally, 16.9% of companies surveyed employ staff whose primary or exclusive job responsibility is to read or otherwise analyze email content.

Bankrate, Inc. published the findings of its second annual poll questioning Americans on their emergency savings accounts. Bankrate found that over half of Americans polled (54 percent) are not equipped with an emergency savings fund (equal to three months living expenses).

U.S. companies continued to attract significant venture capital investment in the second quarter of 2007, as venture financings reached $7.4 billion, an increase of 8% over the same period last year, according to the Quarterly Venture Capital Report released today by Ernst & Young LLP and Dow Jones VentureOne. The quarterly deal count also rose 8% to reach 717 deals, the highest deal volume since 2001.

Median weekly earnings of the nation’s 106.9 million full-time wage and salary workers were $690 in the second quarter of 2007, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. This was 4.7
percent higher than a year earlier compared with a gain of 2.7 percent in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) over the same period.
