Nonfarm payroll employment increased by 132,000 in June, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.5 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Employment rose in several service-providing industries, while manufacturing employment continued to decline. Average hourly earnings rose by 6 cents, or 0.3 percent, over the month.

The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive(R) on behalf of Spherion Corporation, also shows that over three-fourths (77%) of workers remain confident that they will not lose their jobs in the next year. According to the Index, the percentage of workers who believe there are more jobs available increased four percentage points to 27 percent.
