Consumer demand for apartments remains strong as the subprime mortgage meltdown has decreased the number of renters leaving to become homeowners, according to the National Multi Housing Council's July 2007 Quarterly Survey of Apartment Market Conditions. On average, survey respondents reported few changes in the strong market conditions recorded three months ago, with the exception of a significant worsening of debt market conditions.

CarGurus announced its mid-year top 10 most popular car models as voted by consumers . Based on the quantity and quality of ratings received by each car on CarGurus, 2007 models were ranked by consumer popularity. Given the recent news on global warming and the need for greater fuel economy, it was surprising that 70% of the top 10 most popular cars were utility trucks or sports cars. Topping the popularity list was the Jeep Wrangler followed by the Ford Mustang.

The Monster Employment Index dipped three points in July, reflecting a seasonal summer slowdown in online recruitment activity normally seen at this time of year. The Index has shown a decline in online job demand every July since its inception in April 2004 due to the fact that employers typically ratchet back their hiring efforts during the heart of the summer season. The Monster Employment Index is based on a real-time review of millions of employer job opportunities culled from more than 1,500 different Web sites, including Monster®.

U.S. workers want to work for socially and environmentally responsible companies and many are not doing simple things to help their employers conserve energy, such as turning off lights and computers when they are done using them. The study also found that employees are using some energy-saving measures at home but are not taking those same good habits to work with them.

Unemployment rates were lower in June than a year earlier in 186 of the 369 metropolitan areas, higher in 149 areas, and unchanged in 34 areas, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Nineteen metropolitan areas registered jobless rates below 3.0 percent while two areas recorded jobless rates of at least 10.0 percent. The national unemployment rate in June was 4.7 percent, not seasonally adjusted.

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, which had dipped in June, rebounded in July 2007. The Index now stands at 112.6 (1985=100), up from 105.3 in June. The Present Situation Index increased to 139.2 from 129.9 in June. The Expectations Index rose to 94.8 from 88.8.

U.S. venture capital firms raised $3.23 billion in the second quarter of 2007, a 62% drop from the same period last year and the biggest decline since 2002, according to Dow Jones VentureOne, the publisher of VentureSource. The quarter saw 15 venture capital funds raised, compared to 25 a year ago, and was the lowest quarterly fund total since the first quarter of 2003.

comScore released a report on U.S. e-commerce spending for the second quarter of 2007, which showed that non-travel (retail) e-commerce grew 23 percent versus year ago to $27.2 billion, while online travel spending increased 14 percent to $20.3 billion. Total U.S. e-commerce spending climbed 19 percent to $47.5 billion during the period.
