In the latest indication that the housing market remains in a correction phase, housing starts rose 2.3 percent in June to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.467 million following downward revisions for the previous two months, the Commerce Department reported. Building permits, which generally are a harbinger of future building activity, were down sharply last month for both single-family and multifamily construction.

The Producer Price Index for Finished Goods decreased 0.2 percent in June, seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S.Department of Labor reported. This decline followed advances of 0.9 percent in May and 0.7 percent in April. At the earlier stages of processing, prices received by producers of intermediate goods rose 0.5 percent in June after increasing 1.1 percent in the prior month, and the crude goods index moved up 0.3 percent following a 2.0-percent advance in May.

U.S. high-tech goods exports increased by 10 percent from $199 billion to $220 billion, while imports rose by 9 percent from $295 billion to $322 billion between 2005 and 2006, according to AeA's first edition of Trade in the Cyberstates 2007, a study that looks at high-tech trade flows at the national level and for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
